Design/Build Studio with Habitat for Humanity

This studio was divided with half the time working for habitat on a four unit complex that was being constructed for low income housing in North Boulder. The other half was spent designing a highly optimized space also for low income housing.  The project was dictated by a long list of codes and requirements given by the client.  Our design was fully ADA accessible, the living spaces and outdoor areas were designed for maximum solar gain and privacy.  Economy was a critical factor and the design was in constant revision to make it efficient while still preserving function and aesthetics.

Italian Villa

With this design overall my goal was to keep it to a simple two floor plan layout with a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, one living space, and a kitchen to compose the programmatic elements. The location was seaside and a cliff face delegated the limits of the site so naturally it was incorporated into the building.  Despite it being a very luxury oriented theme, simplicity and minimalism gave the design its strength and clarity.

Hand Drawings

A very large emphasis of the program at Boulder was to acquire technical hand drafting skills. Despite having access to computer drafting, we were required to spend hundreds of hours drawing by hand on mylar or vellum.  These skills are still invaluable especially to quickly communicate ideas which aren't easily grasped through verbal description.
